Love In Action
"When we were sitting in, it was love in action. When we went on the freedom ride, it was love in action. The march from Selma to Montgomery was love in action. We do it not simply because it’s the right thing to do, but it’s love in action. That we love our country, we love a democratic society, and so we have to move our feet," Congressman John Lewis

The League of Women Voters joined the national call to action "Good Trouble Lives On" to commemorate the life's work of Congressman John Lewis. Congressman Lewis spoke truth to power in the struggle for civil rights and he defended every American's right to vote. Lewis asked all of us to make Good Trouble, Necessary Trouble to right wrongs and to defend our fellow citizens. He was a proponent of nonviolent actions, Congressman Lewis called nonviolent protest an "immutable principle that you cannot deviate from. If you want to have a good end, your means must be good and noble. Somehow, some way, the end must be caught up in the means.”

LWV US CEO Celina Stewart and President Dianna Wynn have spoken forcefully on the current state of democracy in the US, declaring we are facing a constitutional crisis. We don't intend to sit on the sidelines; our visibility will make a difference.

The League is political - we lobby elected officials, we engage in civics and civic actions, we educate voters, and we work to protect rights - and we are nonpartisan. This is about issues not individuals or political parties.

The SAVE Act is anything, but a save for voting rights. It is based on the false premise that non-citizen voting is widespread. Research from the Brennan Center for Justice found that in 2016 suspected “noncitizen votes accounted for just 0.0001 percent of the votes cast.” Scan the code to learn more about the SAVE Act and how to contact your legislators.

John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (JLVRAA) modernizes the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and helps ensure access to the ballot box for voters of color, voters with language access needs, and voters with disabilities.

Since 2013, with the Supreme Court’s Shelby County v. Holder decision, more challenges to voting have been encountered by women and communities of color. These include reduced polling locations; overly burdensome voter identification requirements; illegal purges of registered voters from voter rolls; and limiting voters’ options on how they can cast their ballot
